The phototransistor is also called a “photo resistor.” It is a “sensor” that reacts to brightness. It forms the counterpart to the lens tip lamp in a light barrier. When the light is bright, or when the lens tip lamp is radiating light at the transistor, it conducts current. When the light beam is interrupted, the transistor does not conduct current.
